Expressing your dogs anal glands, a gross but necessary chore

Gross Alert!! When your dog does "the scoot", and how to remedy it

A subject no one wants to discuss, let alone attempt is cleaning your dogs' anal glads.  If you have ever seen your dog either doing "the scoot" along the carpet, it's not worms as the old wives tale would say. Anal glands are part of every dog and every dog needs to have them cleaned. If you take your dog to the groomer on a regular basis, they may be expressing these for you. Some people take their dog to the vet to have this done.
Why is it important? If not regularly cleaned, they may become impacted, infected and even abscessed. Some dogs just need to have their anal glands expressed more than others. Personally, we normally express the anal glands when bathing the dogs. It's easy to wash up with soap and wash away the putrid smell that accompanies expressing the anal glads.
It's not as hard as you may think. If you are squeamish, you may want to have your vet or groomer do it. If you like to save a buck here and there, taking care of your dogs business doesn't bother you at all or even for the few that think it may even be cool (eeewww!) then this is an easier chore to do than you may think.
This is a great tutorial video on how to do this doggie upkeep yourself at home. This video has been viewed more than 3.5 million times, however if you are drinking your morning coffee or not quite awake, you may want to check this out a bit later in the day...

Do you already do this for your dog or do you have someone else do this for you? We would love to hear, please leave your comments below!
