Cancer Answers

A quick overview, come back often for lots more updates!

As we work to get this site up to date from our many, many years of research, we know that cancer, especially in Goldens, is a big one for breeders and owners alike.  We will post several articles, information on how to treat cancer naturally and things to do to avoid cancer in the first place.

Prevention is always your first line of defense. We have seen HUGE increases in cancers in all breeds, all dogs over the past 15-20 years. Your veterinarian may tell you if your dog is a pure bred, that it is genetic and you need to inform the breeder.  We don't believe that cancer is necessarily "genetic".  What we have found that a poor immune system is actually the genetic component and with a poor immune system, your dog will be more susceptible to cancer. There are also many, many environment factors to cancer.  A dog exposed to chemicals daily or monthly, either internally or externally will be much more prone to cancer than one that is not.  Some of those things are monthly "spot-on" treatments, monthly heart worm treatments, chemical exposure to pesticides, either in the yard or in the home from a monthly service,  and internally from the food that is fed or even the water they drink, and the list goes on and on.  Dogs live much shorter lives than we do so we see the effects of our toxic environments much quicker in them than we do in humans.
We will have posts in the coming days and weeks that will address all these problems and how to best treat and combat these issues.

What can you do today? Prevention is the best medicine! Building a strong immune system is your best defense!

  •  Start off with making sure your dog is getting a diet that is not full of chemicals, animal by-products or food that is "not fit for human consumption". If you can make your dogs food every day from actual human food, that is best. If you can not, then make sure they are getting a super premium dog food that is full of "human grade food" ingredients. Organic and grain free is simply the best if you have a dog with a compromised immune system.

  • Detox every six months, this will help rid the body of toxins and toxic buildup in the spleen, liver, colon, etc.
  • Stop using any and all chemicals in the home and in the yard. If you find that you simply must use some, then make sure the pets are not exposed to that area for at least 4-6 hours, and allow it to "air out" as much as possible

  • Immediately stop using any spot on or internally chemicals to kill fleas, ticks, etc.

  • Increase Vitamin C intake, as well as other immunity boosting vitamins

  • Add a probiotic to the diet to boost immune system

  • If you take your dog on walks through public parks, dog parks or even on the streets and sidewalks, give their feet a quick wash when you get home. Public grass areas as well as golf courses, are heavily treated with pesticides and chemicals. Exhaust, gasoline and oil  from the street will be picked up on the dogs feet as well as the pesticides from the public grasses. It is not uncommon for dogs to lick and/or clean their paws and when they do so, they are ingesting chemicals.

  • If your dog is past it's puppy shots, do not get another vaccine with out doing a titer! Titers show where the immunity level is at and if you keep giving vaccines every year or even every 3 year, you are bombing out the immune system and opening up the dog to cancers, auto-immune syndromes, skin and ear problems and with some vaccines like Rabies, even temperament changes that include excessive shyness and aggression that never used to be there. Giving vaccines over and over again are like you as an adult getting your childhood vaccines over and over again. Many times those early puppy shots provide immunity for the entire life of the dog. Titers have proven this to be true.
